Act Like You Already Run Your Ideal Business
In order to become a great company, your business has to act like a great company long before it actually becomes one.
I listen to a podcast with two accountants who founded a company together. They run their business for the first year, making almost nothing off of it, despite getting a lot of good quality clients, because whatever they brought in to the business, they invested back into it.
After that first year, they began taking a salary, they began pulling in some of the profits of that business, and now they have a thriving business without much of a day-to-day need to be involved in it because they have high quality, well-trained staff. They’re working with clients that fit their ideal target client only, and they’re not wasting a lot of time and energy and resources on clients that don’t fit what they’re trying to achieve. And so even though, for a while there, they struggled to see any kind of benefit out of this business, they’ve built it into one that is now exactly the kind of business they wanted to run from the beginning. Because, in the beginning, they didn’t run their business any other way.
In your own business you have to be willing to run it today like the business you want in the future.
It’s really easy to sit back and say, well, I’ll start running my business that way in a year. I’ll run my business that way five years from now; when I hit a certain revenue target; when I’ve got enough money saved up. You’re never going to reach the day where your business is in the right place, in the right shape, to run it like the business you want.
You, as the leader of that company, have to act like you’re running a great company long before it ever becomes a great company.
